Freelance Writer
Published Writer
I was a writer for regional weekly newspapers for about seven years. I referred to my work as “shoebox” articles, because I knew that one day a child or grandchild would come upon a piece of yellowed newsprint placed lovingly in a shoebox. It could be on the top shelf of a closet or tucked away under the eaves of an attic, but it contains a little piece of a person’s story–the imprint left on a village, town, or world by one individual.
There were also hard news stories and evenings spent following contentious school board meetings, but the feature pieces were my favorite. I met vineyard owners, and artists, amateur historians, and community activists whose roots in their town deepened my own. There are plenty of people worthy of their fifteen minutes of fame, and more, living in the small towns of our community.
I still continue to write for a seasonal publication that reaches those interested in the ebb and flow of life on a barrier island during the summer months.

Public Relations
Head of Public Relations
It seemed that when I first started writing professionally, the ones who came before me moved easily into positions as public information specialists, reporters for dailies, and political aides. So, it seemed appropriate when I was asked to join a large suburban library as a publicist. That was a little more than four years ago; the experience has been one of assessing a community’s needs and growing relationships for the mutual benefit of patrons, staff, and those we connect with through our work life. That was and remains my focus, building relationships.
